It's been a while once again. And I know I promised a whole new blog in my last post, we simply have not had the time to get it all together. We are currently working four days per week at the great Mammoth Cave, and in the remaining three we are doing all we can to keep the crops growing on the farm. It is hard (sometimes REALLY hard) but it is not without its rewards.
The decision making that is. For example, last week we almost planted out our lovely tomato plants. They certainly looked like they could handle it,
That's the simplest thing I can say. We've all adjusted reasonably to having basically no electricity. My sweetie rerouted some wiring to allow the generator to directly power the house, but, since it is noisy and guzzles gasoline, we don't like to run it except to power the glow plug on our stove. While we bake we do all of our baking, charging of rechargeable stuff, and movie watching. The rest of the time we do all of the wonderful things we do without electricity,
It woke my hubby and I up several times. Once we awoke to a particularly intense clap of thunder and through the plastic on our half-finished little cabin we saw a quite bright light and perhaps what could be thought of as a shower of sparks. We figured a transformer had possibly been hit, and started to drift back off. Before we were completely back asleep, at about 3:30 am, our eldest knocked on our door and informed us that the "tarp shed" had caught fire, but that he and his brothers had put it out and not to worry. And by the way there is no electricity over at the house.

Humph.
I started preparing our first seed flats this afternoon, about a month later than I typically would, and it felt great to have my hands in soil again. I look forward to the first little sprouts with such eagerness.

I'd post pictures of the thaw, but honestly (and I think y'all know this for yourselves) it looks kind of desolate out there. So instead, I'll share the last lovely walk in this past week's snow.
I came upon the idea when looking through a rather odd cookbook that I picked up at a library book sale for 25 cents. The author, Carla Emery, talked about cheesemaking as something that all homesteaders should do at least a bit of, and to not get to hung up on fancy-schmancy methods and details. After all, she reasoned, people have been doing this sort of thing for centuries without the benefit of climate control and immaculate sanitation techniques.

This advice really rang true for me. Almost nothing about my food prep areas would be considered ideal by the typical modern foodie. (Except perhaps for Sandor Katz, who seems to have a reasonably relaxed view toward sanitation.)

"So, how has it been going?" I hear you ask.
Extreme weather has denied my sweet hubby and I our preferred lodgings in our half finished little cabin in the woods. The roads have impassable to anyone on earth, but my intrepid middle son (who thankfully made the long trek to pick up our milk a few days ago). The windows got beautifully frosted,
Not the usual Tennessee snow with 1 to 3 inches of accumulation, then maybe a little "wintery mix", then complete meltdown by the following morning. No, no! Not that at all. Around SIX inches fell before we went to bed Monday night.

I am a big advocate of anyone entering into sustainable living by simply dropping their present life and moving onto a piece of land with next to nothing, and frankly not even much of a plan. It's what we did roughly 24 years ago. That method shows you what you are made of, and clarifies your personal set of needs (everyone's are unique). In a general sense it has worked out well for us, and though it has taken quite a while, in many areas we have achieved serious success. Besides, if we had waited to begin living sustainably until we had all our ducks in a row I doubt we ever would have.
