Mindful Monday

Harbinger of Spring
Erigenia Bulbosa

Erigenia bulbosa, also known as harbinger of spring or pepper and salt, is a perennial plant in the carrot family (Apiaceae). E. bulbosais the only species in the genus Erigenia (Nutt.). This plant is known as harbinger of spring because it is one of the earliest blooming native wildflowers of rich forests in the mid-latitude United States. It is found as far north as central New York and southern Wisconsin, west to the western Ozarks, and south to central Alabama.[1] It is also found in extreme southern Ontario.Throughout most of its range it blooms from late February through early April. It is a small spring ephemeral reaching only 5–15 cm tall when in flower, and slightly larger afterwards. Each spherical bulb gives rise to a single purplish stem, which terminates in an umbel. The flowers have white petals and large dark-reddish anthers. The teardrop shaped petals are 3-4 millimeters long, widely spaced and do not touch each other. As is characteristic of the carrot family, the leaves of this plant are sheathed at the base and pinnately divided into many small sections.

The bulb is edible both cooked and raw.[5] The Cherokee were known to chew this plant as medicine for toothaches; it is unknown what parts of plant they chewed.[6] This plant is sometimes used in native wildflower gardens throughout its range.*

Thaw

It's about 50 Degrees out there today, and tonight my sweetheart and I will move back to our own little cabin (we've been staying up in the main house through the coldest nights), hopefully for the duration.  I started preparing our first seed flats this afternoon, about a month later than I typically would, and it felt great to have my hands in soil again.  I look forward to the first little sprouts with such eagerness.

I'd post pictures of the thaw, but honestly (and I think y'all know this for yourselves) it looks kind of desolate out there.  So instead, I'll share the last lovely walk in this past week's snow.

Spring Salad Symphony

Oh glorious spring!!

There are few things I love better than a good spring salad, and I think an awful lot of you out there would be happy to agree with me.  A comment the other day though made me wonder if we are all thinking of the same thing when we say "spring salad".  I've here told you all before that I'm lousy with lettuce, so I depend on a wide variety of both wild and tame salady plants to fulfill my craving.

Shifting

Once upon a time, in Freedom, Indiana, our family spent most of our time with a nearby Amish community.  In that community the term ‘shifting’ was incredibly common.  It took me a while to gain a full grasp of what they meant by shifting.  In my modern train of thought I went straight to shifting gears, as in a car, and although that idea comes close, that wasn’t quite the connotation they had in mind.

It's About Time

Spring is officially here and if you haven't started planting yet you might want to get started pretty quick.  You can do a nice job with tomatoes and such by seeding them indoors and once they come up putting them in a sunny window.  If you have something reflective to put behind them it's even better because then they won't photo-trope (lean out toward the sun) too much.
